In the summertime, I spend my very private little holiday at about 6 p.m. at the Werratal Lake.

Grabbing my bike, I leave my apartment in Eschwege to get to the sand beach on the southern shore in no time. The mountains of the Werratal all around me, overlooking the historic castle of Wolfsbrunnen, the Bismarck Tower on the Großer Leuchtberg and the town of Eschwege, I always have the feeling that I'm on a holiday.
At the Werratal Lake, 2 km long and 600 m wide, apart from the beach on the Eschwege side, there is also a sand beach on the eastern shore, in Meinhard. Both beaches are supervised by professional lifeguards in the summer season and have a playground for children. For the “big ones”, there is a chance to play beach volleyball, and, in Meinhard, also Boule.
If you have some time left, you should get on your bicycle or put inline skates on your feet. An asphalted circular road of seven kilometres leads you around the lake. Especially early in the year, when the sun makes you perceive the first glimpse of spring, this road is particularly popular. The section on the southern side is probably one of the most attractive as the road there passes between the lake and the Werra river.
Since spring 2008, the Werranixe, an electrically driven pontoon boat with moorings in Meinhard and Eschwege, glides almost silently over the lake, a water tour aboard taking one hour. And for those who prefer sports, there is a canoe and boat rental, diving facilities, a surfing and yachting club with a yacht haven, a slipway and a crane.By the way, did you know that the rowing championships of Hesse are held on this lake? The regatta covers the distance of 2 km, which is no problem for this lake.
The Werratal Lake with its adjoining ponds is also very popular among anglers. What a pity that during the week I always have time only for a short holiday!
