Stiftsruine Bad Hersfeld (Hersfeld Abbey)
Venue for the famous Bad Hersfelder Festspiele (Bad Hersfeld Festival)
Hersfeld Abbey is the largest Romanesque church ruin in the world. Today it acts as an impressive venue for concerts and public events as well as a site for the annual Bad Hersfeld Festival (Bad Hersfelder Festspiele). The construction of Hersfeld Abbey was performed in the early part of the 12th century (1038-1144). However, most parts of the “Ancestor Church” were already built in the years 831-850.
In an annex of the church ruins, which is also the last still existing part of the monastery, there is a museum. Here, you can learn historic facts about Bad Hersfeld as well as the abbey itself.
Throughout the year, changing exhibitions take place in the basement of the renovated chapter house.
