Kaufungen: Regional Museum “Old Schoolhouse”
With love to detail, the Museum shows regional crafts from Northern Hesse and exhibitions on “the good old time”.
Kaufungen with its Regional Museum is situated not far from Kassel. The Museum is located in an old half-timbered building, which was erected as a schoolhouse in 1842. The building complex, consisting of a main building, a half-timbered barn with forge and two depots, houses an exhibition that provides a comprehensive picture of village life, labour and living in Northern Hesse with various exhibits.
In eleven “crafts rooms” you can experience the work of shoemakers, saddlers, carpenters, turners, brickmakers / crockers, tailors, linen weavers, timbermen, wainwrights, beekeepers and forgers.
The “Mitmach-Haus” (“Hands-on House”), which is affiliated to the Museum, provides a music school, children’s studios, a museum garden and further exhibition rooms. As a location for on-going training, experience and recreation for kids, teens and adults, it provides several – seasonally varying – actions and special exhibitions.
