Karlsaue Park
Next to the Orangerie Palace and the Marble Bath, you will find a scenic botanical diversity.
It takes just a short walk from the Kassel town centre to reveal its bright side: Karlsaue Park. Embedded between Rosenhang (Rose Slope) and the river Fulda, the park was built around 1700 in the Baroque style. With its water basins, the fan-shaped framing canals and its infinite expanse, the park was designed to be the highlight of Schloss Orangerie (the Orangerie Palace), the summer retreat of Landgrave Karl. Re-designed as a landscape park at the end of the 18th century, the park represents a significant historic heritage today. A picturesque botanical variety is preserved and cultivated on the Flower Island of Siebenbergen.
In Schloss Orangerie, you can find the Astrophysical Cabinet with its Planetarium (Astronomisch-Physikalisches Kabinett mit Planetarium). The museum displays a wide range of scientific and technical objects ranging from the ancient times to the Renaissance and the present.
The Marmorbad (Marble Bath) is situated right next to Schloss Orangerie, being erected as a baronial bathing room in 1722-1728. The famous sculptor Pierre Etienne Monnot created the beautiful interior design with its marble sculptures and a wall relief displaying the myths from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The Marmorbad is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful example of the Italian Baroque north of the Alps.
