Immenhausen: Glass Museum
The Glass Museum Immenhausen shows traditional and modern exhibits from Northern Hesse and Southern Lower-Saxony as well as contemporary glass art.
The Immenhausen Glass Museum is situated at the Reinhardswald (Reinhard Forest) close to Kassel and is one of the few museums specialised on glass products in Germany. The town of Immenhausen established it in the converted generator housing of the former glassworks Süßmuth.
The museum has its focus on the glass manufacturing traditions in Northern Hesse and Southern Lower-Saxony between the Middle Ages and early modern times. Another part of the exhibition displays the history of the Glassworks Immenhausen (established 1809) and its predecessor situated in Kaufungen Forest as well as the life and working conditions of glassmakers in the forest glassworks.
Special attention is put to the life and work of Richard Süßmuth, glass polisher and entrepreneur.
Originally from Silesia he took over the destroyed glassworks in Immenhausen after Second World War and managed to enhance its prestige in the 1950s and 1960s on an international scale.
Products of the Glassworks Süßmuth are on display as well as glasses by other manufactories and famous designers, who made “design-history”.
The museums’ extensive studio glass-exhibition shows glass art by international glass artists.
Apart from that changing special exhibitions take place with historic and modern glass art as subject.
