Heringen: Potash Mining Museum
Experience the exciting history and presence of potash mining in the midst of the producing Werra Potash Mining Site!
Already for a 100 years potassium is mined in Heringen and its surrounding area. Today there are still three mines in the Werra area which mine 24 hours the treasured “white gold” from a depth of 500-1,000 m to the surface.
The mining has influenced people’s lives in the region. It was for the first time in this destitute region that industrial jobs developed on a big scale. For generations most of the locals work in the potash mining or potash factories. The exhibition shows how strongly many people were and still are involved in the ups and downs of mining.
The exhibition has its focus on the development of potash mining and the changes of daily work involved.
Next to different original exhibits and samples, a movie demonstrates the development from raw materials to final products.
