Fulda bike trail
Make a bike trip through one of the most beautiful and pristine regions of Germany. Discover the Fulda valley by bike.
For approximately 130 kilometres, the Fulda bike trail R1 leads you through Northern Hesse – home of the Grimm Brothers.
The Fulda bike trail runs for 130 kilometres from the source of the Fulda River at the 950 metre high Wasserkuppe in the Rhön mountain range to the Weser River valley at Hann. Münden, where the Fulda and the Werra Rivers flow together to the Weser River.
Romantic towns with half-timbered houses, such as Bad Hersfeld, Rotenburg an der Fulda, Melsungen and Kassel, the city of the “documenta” art exhibition, are located along the trail and invite you to make a stopover.
You will be able to experience the history of Northern Hesse during comfortable day trips.
Furthermore, an exceptional attraction is waiting for you – a ropeway over the Fulda River between Beiseförth and Binsförth. A pressure of roughly 15 kg has to be exerted on two hand cranks to cover a distance of 50 metres. A sports challenge that is well worth the effort: Floating atop a river really is a very special experience!
Special events along the Fulda bike trail R1 in the course of the year:
- Bad Hersfeld:
Discover the “open air theatre” during the Bad Hersfeld festival in the monastery ruin (June to August). - Rotenburg an der Fulda:
The traditional folk and beach festival takes places on the first weekend in July every year. The special highlight is the festival in the castle gardens on Saturday evening. Thousands of candles are spread over the castle gardens and create a unique atmosphere. - Melsungen:
Visit the Northern Hessian speciality festival and taste home-made kickshaws of all kinds! - Kassel:
Marvel at the famous trick fountains in the Bergpark (“mountain park”) Wilhelmshöhe! The trick fountains are operated solely through natural pressure and gravity. (May to October). - Hann. Münden:
Discover the beautiful town with its half-timbered houses at the confluence of the Fulda and Werra Rivers, where the legendary travelling doctor Eisenbart offers consultations for patients from near and far. (May to August).
