The next documenta (d13) takes place in the City of Kassel from June 9 to September 16, 2012.
The most important exhibition for contemporary art in the world – the documenta – takes place in the City of Kassel every five years. For 100 days, the Hessian city becomes to an irresistible magnet, and this, in fact, not only for art lovers.
The documenta has been established in 1955 by the artist and art teacher Arnold Bode in Kassel. After years of national socialist dictatorship, the exhibition intended to confront and reconcile the German public with international modernism and its own failed enlightenment.
Nobody would have thought that the exhibition – often called “a museum for 100 days” – would develop into an unparalleled success – yet, in the summer 2012, already the thirteenth documenta is going to take place.
Its unique character still persists: every five years, a new art director is appointed, and the entire exhibition is reinvented virtually from scratch.
