Burg Herzberg (Herzberg Castle)
The mighty ruin of Herzberg Castle is situated on top of a stretched basalt rock.
South of the Rimberg (592m altitude), between Bad Hersfeld and Alsfeld, the mighty ruin of Herzberg Castle is situated on top of a huge rock. The castle was built by Marshal Heinrich von Romrod in the 13th century from a vantage point overlooking an old commercial route. Since 1477, the edifice has been in the possession of the von Dörnberg family. Repair work started in the 19th century after Herzberg fell into disuse during the Seven Years’ War (1754 and 1756-1763) and parts of it were earmarked for dismantling.
Today, Herzberg Castle is an official venue for different events all year round.
Medieval Jousting Tournaments
Takes place every year on June 2nd, organised and hosted by the Hessische Ritterbund (Hessian Federation of Knights) with the kind support of the Freiherrlich Dörnberg’sche Stiftung (Baron Dörnberg Foundation).
