Borken (Hesse): Hessian Lignite Mining Museum

In four sections you can learn interesting historical facts about coal and energy.

The Hessian Lignite Mining Museum presents itself with the motto “experiencing industrial culture and landscape changes”. In four sections you can learn interesting historical facts about coal and energy. The theme park “Kohle & Energie” (Coal & Energy) presents in a self-explanatory and experience orientated way huge surface mining machines, mining locomotives, power station tanks and turbines. Especially for the young crowd there are special, age-based “Playful Experience Sections” (“Spielerische Erfahrungsbereiche”) where they can produce energy, convey mine water, find answers to difficult questions or catch sun energy.
The associated centre for nature conservation “Borkener See” explains the dealings with landscapes after the end of mining. It shows among other things how a former mining site becomes a new lake.
A permanent exhibition about mining history gives an overview about 400 years tradition of Hessian lignite mining.
Visitor tunnels display sub-surface coal mining. Here you can also find mining units in operation.
