Artists’ Colony in Willingshausen
The historic centre of the village, its idyllic nature, and the unique illumination of the Swalm have always been an attraction for those interested in art from far and wide. You have a chance to become an artist yourself: just take part in the art courses!
The Artists’ Colony in Willingshausen is the oldest artists’ colony in Europe.
The first artists came to the idyllic Willingshausen, a small village on the Swalm, as early as 1830. They were mesmerized by the landscape of the place with its softly curving hills and untouched valleys that were and still are remarkably beautiful in the light of Swalm. The artists have captured this landscape and rural lifestyle in their pictures.
In the course of centuries, the rural life there has changed significantly. However, the historic centre of the village, its idyllic nature, and the unique illumination of the Swalm remained. These have attracted visitors from far and wide down to the present day.
Visit various exhibitions and immerse yourself into the creations of early modern and contemporary artists.
